TVS can be good for you

Television sets are good for watching indy films and foreign films on video and DVD. Thus a television set can be a good thing. Mine was bought from a Chilean grad student returning home with his hand-built entertainment cart for about $30. The only downside is the DVD-VCR was probably reconditioned in a maquiladora. But then some Mexicans like the changes maquiladoras bring to their towns.

All in all a good bargain. BTW: no cable or commercial television enters this thing. Only videos and DVDs. And cat paws. Meow.

'Stale' TV Holiday Specials!

One factor that makes Television particularly insipid are the continual re-runs of those Ohh-Sooo STALE Holiday Programs! The only thing that changes from decade to decade are the Commercials.
I mean HOW MANY Times can we sit through 'Christmas On Walton's Mountain' or 'Miracle on 34th Street' 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' 'Rudolph The RedNosed Reindeer' 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'
'Silent Night' 'The Christmas Story' 'A Very Brady Christmas' and a CRAPLOAD of 'Other's just as TIRED'?
If Television wants to keep us Interested in 'Holiday Specials' at LEAST make up NEW Ones!

Being a pennyless student isn't that bad...

When I started at university in September '06 someone gave me an old TV that they didn't want anymore. I figured that I could use it in my room to watch when I'm not studying (*AHEM* yes...."stud-ee-ing"). However I realised that the TV did not come with an aerial. So I ventured to my nearest ASDA and bought one for about £5. I then figured that I would need a remote control, so I picked one up for about £10. When I tried the TV out I couldn't get a decent reception and I couldn't tune in the right channels. I was tempted to go back to ASDA and pick up a signal booster for probably round about £20. But then, add on top of that the £33 a month I was paying for my license fee (That's right folks! In Britain it has been decreed by law that we have to have a freaking LICENSE to watch TV). So I decided against having a TV, I unplugged it, stacked it on top of my wardrobe to let it gather dust and promptly cancelled my license which I would now not need to pay.

Having done that, not only have I saved myself a bit of cash and space in my accommodation (student rooms are not known for their grand sizes!) but I have also come to realise how much I don't actually care for TV. I remember I used to watch it simply out of habit. It was on most of the evening when I got back from work (before I enrolled in uni that is) and even though I complained and bitched about the "quality" of the programming, I never turned it off and did something else.

Now I hardly care for television and find myself only watching at most an hour when it is on. And more often than not I can go whole days without even looking at it. I reckon in another few months to a year, I won't even feel the need to switch it on even to watch The Simpsons in the evening. In fact, I'm pretty certain the only reason I have a TV now is because it's hooked up to my Playstation and DVD player...

TV versus The Computer Screen!

Television is a passive activity.
The brain processes whatever garbage the TV program is thowing at it,as well as 8 30 second Commercials run for every three minutes of "Programming" and NOTHING more.It is 100% NON-Interactive viewing.
People have said: ...but a TV and a computer are just "screens" whats the Difference?
The difference is Interaction Vs Passivity.
With Television, your hands are doing things they shouldn't be doing such as smoking one cigarette after another(VERY "Healthy!")..or dipping into bowl after bowl of Popcorn or munchies.(another "really healthy" TV pastime!)
When we are on our Computers we are "Interacting" with the source material. Our brain is processing information wether we are jacking off to Porn,or doing reserch for a College Thesus. Our "hands" are buisy operating a Keyboard and Mouse instead of Smoking incessantly or eating.
A Computer is 100% Interactive
A TV Set is 100% Passive
Interactive Brain activity is healthy.
Passive bombardment of the Brain is not.

Noticing how others that watch TV are...

Hi there!
My hubby and I have lived together for 10 years and have NEVER bought a TV. ( We moved out at 17)..Everyone else has always said they have felt sorry for us and either bought us a TV or given us one of theres. The funny thing is that every single one of them has always blown up on its own! We have always told people that we are happy without one but they dont beleive us and insist on giving us one. Admittingly when we have had one we have gotton hooked on programs just like everyone else. This time someone gave us a TV again and we relised how much time were spending time watching it and becoming hooked that we decided to drive to there house and give it back to them. They couldnt understand it! We have found the benefits again no TV gives. More time to spend time with people we love and more time to do other activities. It also feels like it calms the mind alot more. I think people are afraid to give up TV because it serves as a distraction to actually getting on with our lives instead of living through 'someone elses'.

Hi, I am new to this tribe thing, but I wrote a song that kicks ass... It's called "Ignore Your Television" and says all that I feel about the new opiate of the masses. My name is Craig Morrison, but I go by CMOR in the Seattle underground music scene. Really underground, so I am trying to get a record contract.

Anyone who wants to sign me to a label can email me at: craigless64@yahoo.com

Ignore Your Television can be heard at: www.mispace.com/Quiphop

Enjoy, and send me feedback!

I was not able to attend Burning man this year because I was not allowed into the USA. I've been doing volunteer work rebuilding the Gulf coast since Katrina, and the customs officers said I must have been doing there illegally, and told me I couldn't return for five years. After looking at my site, www.actionheronetwork.net ....they knew i was bad news.... way too free to be allowed in the Land of the Free.

They said, "You can't live without making money."
I said, "There are more important things than making money."
They said, "Do you think you are better than us?"

So, I missed the burn (would have been my 4th)... but just watched this: http://www.current.tv/burningman/

I love being home in Eastern Canada... but after watching the above link... I'm a bit jealious.

The paper today said the average 8 year old watches 1100 hours of tv a year. Most tv is stupid ot mind control... but really, it is a parental guidence problem.

Ever actually sat back and looked at people who stare at the television? They look like zombies. As if their mouths are open, drooling commercials from the corner of their lips. I personally do not have a television in my house, and am totally going to keep it that way!
Besides, I'd rather be painting, writing, reading, playing a musical instrument, or having conversations with REAL people. Wouldn't you??

Went out to dinner with the hubby yesterday. He stared over my shoulder a second at the TV playing in the attached bar.
"That's funny."
"What, hon?"
"That woman is wearing a dress designed to show her boobs."
"Oh, the TV." (I could tell!)
"Yeah. Seems like, to make a new TV show, they find a new young woman with big boobs, put her in something to show them off, and give her funny lines to say."

He was addicted to TV two years ago! I have the bestest honey ever! Either that or I'm a HORRIBLE influence!

Next time you get the urge to watch TV ask yourself: How much time do I spend watching TV? How much of that time could I be spending enriching myself? When was the last itme I did something that improved my well being? Could I be learning/ doing something exciting and new right now? When was the last time I meditated?
