Noticing how others that watch TV are...

Hi there!
My hubby and I have lived together for 10 years and have NEVER bought a TV. ( We moved out at 17)..Everyone else has always said they have felt sorry for us and either bought us a TV or given us one of theres. The funny thing is that every single one of them has always blown up on its own! We have always told people that we are happy without one but they dont beleive us and insist on giving us one. Admittingly when we have had one we have gotton hooked on programs just like everyone else. This time someone gave us a TV again and we relised how much time were spending time watching it and becoming hooked that we decided to drive to there house and give it back to them. They couldnt understand it! We have found the benefits again no TV gives. More time to spend time with people we love and more time to do other activities. It also feels like it calms the mind alot more. I think people are afraid to give up TV because it serves as a distraction to actually getting on with our lives instead of living through 'someone elses'.

I'm totally with you on that. Barret brought the TV with him when we got married, and it sat for two years 3 feet from the cable, and we never plugged it in. I think we used it 5-6 times to watch rented movies, but that's about it. It mainly collected dust, and was a launching pad for the cats to get up on the bookshelves. I feel like I've wasted so much when I spend a whole day watching TV. And there are some times when I feel so bombarded by advertisements I wanna scream. I do like having one though, we are very busy people, and sometimes just chilling together with a new movie is just the thing we need to slow down.

I ditched my box 5 years ago.

I hated the the kids watching it. They would sit there mouths half open brains switched off absorbing whatever happened to be there. I heard a thing on the radio today suggesting that we use more energy sleeping than watching TV.

There is a vast difference bettween sitting in front of a TV Set and sitting at the keyboard of a Computer.
Sitting in front of a Television Set,one is enguaged in "Passive Immersion" the brain is literally only absorbing whatever it is they are selling on TV,wether it's a favorite show or a new and improved Tampon.Television is NOT "Interactive" your brain is doing the same thing as your Cable coming into it is. That Cable transmits a signal, into your TV set and you sit there and mindlessly, your brain recieve that signal. While in front of a TV Set your body and your mind are "motionless". part of America's Obesity problems result from the only thing you can "do" with your hands while watching Television is "Smoke and Eat". I have watched Bud's of mine go through a pack of cigarettes and three bowls of Popcorn and natcho chips just watching one football game for example. The unhealthy nature of TV Viewing is obvious and has been a major contributor to Americans being grossly overweight. Advertsiers bombard the brain with the same 8 commercials all through a 2 hour sports game, another unhealthy intrusion to your brain. The term "Mindless Commercials" could not be closer to the truth! and the frequency at wich Commercials are played borders on the "Ridiculous". In a standard two hour sports game or TV movie of the week the same six 30 second Commercials are run for every THREE Minutes of Program. This is bordering on "Brainwashing".
At a Computer the situation is vastly different. You aren't "viewing" the Computer, you are directly interacting with it. Your brain is being used to do things such as reserch information, text message a freind or family member,or even directly interact with a freind Via a Web Camera. Your mind isn't drawing a blank watching something mundane,it is 100% interactive, even your hands are buisy typing and working the mouse instead of feeding your face or smoking endless cigarettes.
Tv Viewing and Computer operating are NOT "one and the same".
